NAGASAKI, Japan - A bloodstained shirt worn in 1990 by then Nagasaki Mayor Hitoshi Motoshima during a shooting attack is shown to the press in the southwestern Japan city's municipal office on Dec. 17, 2014, ahead of an exhibit of items related to him set for Jan. 15-19, 2015. Motoshima, who died at 92 on Oct. 31, 2014, was shot by a rightist in January 1990 for his statements about the emperor's responsibility for World War II.

Sharp to voluntarily recall over 16,500 projectors

OSAKA, Japan - Photo shows Sharp Corp.'s XV-101T projector. The company said Dec. 2 it will recall a total of 16,599 liquid crystal projectors in Japan from Dec. 3 after it received reports of two cases of fire involving the equipment. The projectors, the XV-101T and five other types, were made between January 1990 and August 1993. The equipment is no longer on sale.

Sato pleaded guilty to abducting a 9-year-old girl in 1990 and holding her captive for nine years and two months until January at his home in Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture.

New Hiroshima mayor Akiba starts tenure

Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) lower house member Tadatoshi Akiba goes into the Hiroshima city hall to start his term in office Feb. 23. Akiba, 56, was elected Hiroshima mayor Jan. 31, running as an independent backed by some SDP city assembly members and labor groups. In January, Akiba gave up his seat in the House of Representatives he had held since 1990 to run in the mayoral election.
